Examining the Content Validity of the Illness Perceptions Questionnaire-Revised (IPQ-R) Adapted for Use among Women Living with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome
The aims of this study are to: (1) adapt the generic Illness Perception Questionnaire-Revised (IPQ-R) for use among women living with (WLW) polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), (2) assess the cognitions of WLW PCOS while completing items on the adapted PCOS IPQ-R, (3) determine whether these cognitions are congruent with the meaning of items and subscales as interpreted by the PI and theorized by the generic questionnaire’s designers, and (4) identify the nature and extent of problems that WLW PCOS experience when completing the adapted PCOS IPQ-R. Support for Comprehensive Sexual Health Education
This secondary data analysis, in partnership with a community organization dedicated to advancing and improving adolescent health outcomes, was based on a multi-phase community-based participatory research study investigating the publics, parents, and scholars’ attitudes towards comprehensive sexual health education. This research was conducted in the Tampa Bay area where STI, HIV, and teen pregnancy outcomes are poor among youth. In part, this study produced preliminary data to support a grant application, submitted by the community organization, to fund a teen pregnancy prevention intervention in the area. Teen Outreach Program replication project: A randomized control trial of the TOP in 26 non-metropolitan Florida Counties
USF, in collaboration with the Florida Department of Health, designed the TOP trial and piloted the intervention. The USF researchers assessed the effects of TOP on participants, compared to demographically similar nonparticipants, as much as three years after the program’s initial implementation. Investigators measured such outcomes as rates of teen pregnancy, sexually transmitted diseases, school suspensions, failures and drop outs. Grant Amount: $3,456,000

An in-depth situational analysis of Florida county-level decisions in sexuality education programming: How does change happen at local levels?
The specific aims of this mixed-method study were to (1) determine the social, historical, and policy-related contextual factors that impact the adoption of sexuality education programs within Florida county schools; (2) identify community actors who or groups that have primary influence over adoption of sexuality education programming; and (3) identify and characterize the strategies employed by these actors/groups to influence curriculum adoption. This mixed-methods study included a content analysis of school board policies and meeting minutes, a media analysis of local newspapers, and interviews with key stakeholders. Grant Amount: $300,000

Specific aims were to (1) assess the score of existing and emerging oral/systemic women’s health issues across the lifespan; (2) develop a transdisciplinary conceptual framework that addresses women’s health from an oral/systemic perspective; and (3) prepare a center grant to establish a Center for Transdisciplinary Research on Women’s Health (CTR-WH) at USF. The purpose of this initiative was to (1) build upon existing tobacco use prevention education in ECU’s required health course; (2) expand provision and promotion of cessation programs for scholars who want to quit, (3) expand scholar group advocacy efforts for tobacco prevention; (4) eliminate scholars’ exposure to second-hand tobacco smoke by creating and promoting the adoption of a tobacco-free campus policy. ECU’s campus became tobacco-free on August 1, 2012. Grant Amount: $70,000

The purpose of this formative research is to assess the health and healthcare needs of Iowan adolescents who identify as a sexual or gender minority (SGM), specifically comparing differences between urban and rural populations. Adolescents, ages 14 to 17 years, will be invited to anonymously complete an online survey that includes, but is not limited to, the following topics: (1) demographic or descriptive information, (2) family and interpersonal relationships, (3) health service access and utilization, (4) mental health, (5) physical health, and (6) sexual and reproductive health. This research will inform future studies aiming to develop culturally-competent health interventions and health service delivery methods that will promote the health and development of this marginalized population.
