Anesthesiologists play a vital role in undergraduate medical education by teaching foundational clinical skills and emphasizing patient safety. They provide hands-on training in airway management, intravenous access and the administration of anesthesia. Through their work in perioperative care, pain management and critical care, anesthesiologists offer students exposure to specialized techniques and the principles of monitoring and pharmacology.

Additionally, they foster interdisciplinary learning, helping students appreciate teamwork in healthcare settings. Anesthesiologists serve as mentors, guiding medical students through complex clinical scenarios and instilling a culture of safety and competence essential for their future medical practice.

Obstetricians and gynecologists provide students with essential knowledge and skills related to women’s health, reproduction and obstetrics. They teach foundational topics such as prenatal care, labor and delivery, gynecological examinations and the management of common reproductive health conditions. OB/GYNs emphasize the importance of preventive care, including cancer screenings, contraceptive counseling and sexual health education. They also provide hands-on clinical training in performing pelvic exams, understanding ultrasound imaging, and managing obstetric emergencies.

The goal of the obstetrics and gynecology curriculum is to provide students in the College of Osteopathic Medicine with a foundation of knowledge and experience in women’s healthcare, including opportunities to observe and participate in simulated obstetrical cases, clinical activities, clerkship didactics and research involving women’s health.

By integrating clinical practice with communication skills and patient-centered care, OB/GYN educators help students develop a comprehensive approach to addressing the unique healthcare needs of women across all stages of life.

Our faculty members are committed to the pediatric education of medical students and residents in all aspects of teaching, clinical practice and research. Our goal is to prepare medical students to care for the health care needs of children from newborn through adolescence, whether as a pediatric specialist or in the context of a different specialty of medicine.

During years one and two, the pediatrics faculty provide didactic instruction in the classroom and via small group discussions, simulations and neonatology labs. As a result, our students have a strong foundation in the practice of pediatrics and are confident and well prepared to meet the challenge of clinical rotations in years three and four.

During years three and four, students are exposed to both inpatient and outpatient pediatrics in their required core clerkship and can choose many different pediatric electives. These pediatric emergency medicine, pediatric intensive care medicine, pediatric neurology, pediatric nephrology, pediatric cardiology, pediatric surgery and pediatric gastroenterology.

Radiologists play a key role in undergraduate medical education by teaching students how to interpret medical images and understand principles of diagnostic imaging. They provide foundational knowledge about imaging modalities such as X-rays, CT scans, MRIs and ultrasounds, highlighting their clinical applications and limitations.

Radiologists also educate students on radiation safety, appropriate imaging selection and the integration of imaging findings into patient care. By emphasizing critical thinking and diagnostic reasoning, they help students develop skills to correlate imaging results with clinical scenarios. Furthermore, radiologists often guide students in understanding the role of advanced imaging in disease detection, treatment planning and monitoring, making them an essential part of a well-rounded medical education.

Surgeons play a vital role in undergraduate medical education by teaching students the principles of surgical care, procedural skills and clinical decision-making. Our faculty members are committed to the surgical education of medical students and residents in all aspects of teaching, clinical practice and research. Our goal is to prepare general and subspecialty surgeons for our nation’s future health care needs while remaining dedicated to meeting the physician workforce needs of the state, particularly in underserved rural areas. Our faculty provide hands-on training in fundamental techniques such as suturing, wound management and sterile practices during the preclinical years. Through clinical rotations, students gain exposure to preoperative evaluation, intraoperative procedures and postoperative care, fostering an understanding of the full surgical care continuum.

Surgeons emphasize the importance of teamwork, communication and multidisciplinary collaboration in operating room settings. By mentoring students and modeling critical thinking under pressure, they help develop problem-solving abilities and technical competence. This comprehensive approach ensures students are well-prepared for the challenges of patient care in both surgical and non-surgical fields.
