Surgery teaching assistants

The surgery department utilizes medical students from both the doctor of osteopathic medicine and doctor of podiatric medicine programs to assist in the teaching of the basic surgical skills course. Surgical teaching assistants become very competent in their surgical skills and have the opportunity to develop advanced skills by working closely with general surgery residents in the surgical skills course and the resident laboratory experience.

Teaching assistant awards

Outstanding and advanced surgery TAs are recognized each year at a special recognition event. TAs who exhibit advanced and outstanding commitment and skill performance in the teaching of the basic surgical skills laboratory during the previous academic year are awarded.

Additional educational opportunities

Additional opportunities are available for surgical TAs to participate in community educational events such as Explorer Scouts, Girls in Science Day and collaboration with area surgeons in advanced new technology as it evolves and develops.
