What Are the Minimum Academic Requirements for Admission?
To be considered for admission to DMU’s Interdisciplinary PhD in Biomedical Sciences program, students must satisfy the following requirements:
- A bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited institution
- A minimum 3.0 GPA (cumulative and science)
- MCAT, GRE or DAT required
How Do I Apply?
The PhD in biomedical sciences program accepts applications directly through the DMU website. Applications are reviewed and verified once they are complete.
Complete the dual degree application if you’re pursuing a DO/PhD or DPM/PhD.
Do I Need a Bachelor’s Degree in Science to Apply?
Applicants must hold a bachelor’s degree in biological sciences or a closely related field from a regionally accredited U.S. institution.
Program Structure and Curriculum
How Long Does it Take to Complete the PhD Program?
The Interdisciplinary PhD in Biomedical Sciences program at DMU is designed to be completed in four years of full-time study.
What Learning Experiences Are Included in the PhD Program?
DMU’s Interdisciplinary PhD in Biomedical Sciences degree is a four-year, 86-credit program designed to give you both depth and flexibility. You’ll complete:
- 40 credit hours of research, where you’ll explore real-world biomedical challenges.
- 46 credit hours of coursework, including discipline-specific content, dissertation proposal development and defense.
Can I Pursue a Dual Degree With the PhD program?
Yes. Students enrolled in DMU’s Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine or Doctor of Podiatric Medicine programs may apply to complete the Interdisciplinary PhD in Biomedical Sciences as a dual degree.
The program follows a 2-3-2 structure:
- Years 1–2: Complete DO or DPM coursework
- Years 3–5: Focus on PhD research and training
- Years 6–7: Return to complete the DO or DPM curriculum

Students receive a $32,800 annual stipend to support living expenses.
