The Glanton Fund represents Des Moines University’s response to persistent poor health outcomes related to race. Established in 2004, the fund generates scholarships for minority students, who are under-represented in the health care professions, and supports programs that foster the cultural humility of all DMU students.
The 17th annual event to celebrate the Glanton Fund and the diversity and inclusion it seeks to support will occur virtually on Thursday, Oct. 8. Those who support the fund as donors and event sponsors stand with DMU for the right of all people to live safely and to be treated with respect and dignity in accessing health care.
The Glanton Fund is named in honor of Willie Stevenson Glanton and Judge Luther T. Glanton Jr., civil rights leaders in central Iowa who served as DMU trustees.
Glanton Fund supporters also stand with this year’s Glanton honorees, Robert Sieman, D.O.’73, and Loretta Sieman, M.S.E. They share the fund’s goal of making the world a better place. An obstetrician/gynecologist and medical director of New Leaf Wellness in West Des Moines, IA, Dr. Sieman has devoted his practice to serving families, expecting mothers and menopausal and post-menopausal women and men. He is the first DMU graduate to be a Glanton honoree. Loretta is a retired teacher, the first woman to serve on the West Des Moines City Council and a tireless volunteer for a wide range of charitable, educational and civic causes.
