Health Professions Scholarship Program (Military)

Provided by the military services (Army, Navy, Air Force). You apply directly to one of the services through a military recruiter. Each scholarship provides the costs of tuition, required fees, health insurance, required books and equipment, and a monthly living allowance. After completion of your residency, you must repay one year of military service for each year of scholarship. Contact the financial aid office for local recruiter information.

National Health Service Corps

Provided by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. You apply directly to the service. Each scholarship provides the costs of tuition, required fees, health insurance, required books and equipment, and a monthly living allowance. After completing a D.O. residency you must repay one year of service for each year of scholarship. Visit http://nhsc.bhpr.hrsa.gov for information.

Indian Health Service

Provided by the Indian Health Service, U.S. Department of Health & Human Services. You apply directly to the service. Each scholarship provides the costs of tuition, required fees, health insurance, required books and equipment, and a monthly living allowance. After completing a D.O. residency, you must repay one year of service for each year of scholarship. Preference may be given to members of federally recognized Native American tribes and Alaska natives. Information is available at www.ihs.gov .

College of Osteopathic Medicine (COM) Scholarships

DMU College of Osteopathic Medicine - Applications are e-mailed to students in February. (Please note there are numerous awards in EACH category and a student may apply in as many categories as they qualify)

Loan Repayment Programs

Indian Health Service and National Health Service Corps

Both agencies will contract with graduate physicians to practice at an Indian Health Service site or federally designated Health Professions Shortage Area (HPSA). Student loan debt is reduced in proportion to the number of years served, up to a maximum of four years. Contact the agency for more information

Iowa Osteopathic Forgivable Loan

Available to D.O. students who are Iowa residents prior to matriculation as determined by the Iowa College Student Aid Commission. Need analysis not required. After residency, a student must practice one year in Iowa for every 2 years the loan was taken. Amount varies according to state appropriation. Heavy interest penalty for non-Iowa medical practice.

Osteopathic Physician Recruitment Program (OPRP)

Up to $100,000 of student debt reduction in return for four years of practice in an Iowa shortage or medically underserved community. Available to any D.O. with an Iowa license. All DMU Grads are notified of the program during their residency or contact the Financial Aid Office. (More information)
