DMU gains new rotation and internship site in China

Didier Decamps, M.D., foreign affairs staff member Christina Huang and DMU Director of Global Health Sondra Schreiber at Calmette International Hospital in Kunming, China, in November.

In November, I visited our newest international rotation and internship site in Kunming, China. Kunming is the capital and largest city in the Yunnan Province in Southwest China. This rotation site is in the Sanford Pediatric Clinic, an outpatient clinic housed within Calmette International Hospital. We also partner with Sanford World Clinics for our international rotation in Ghana.

The first DMU student will rotate in China in March 2018. Students at this site will work with Didier Decamps, M.D., a pediatrician with a neurology subspecialty and more than 20 years of practice. Common cases seen in the clinic include viruses, developmental issues, learning disabilities and speech delay.

Although beneficial, knowledge of Mandarin Chinese is not required for this rotation as there are translators available. This site is a great opportunity for osteopathic medical students who have an interest in pediatrics to learn about the Chinese way of care. The site has also expressed interest in hosting students in our master’s degree program in public health who wish to do an internship in Kunming.
