Heal your heel pain: Relief for plantar fasciitis is within reach

If you’ve experienced heel pain, you’re not alone. One in 10 people will have this problem at some point in their lifetime.

Plantar heel pain, also known as plantar fasciitis, is a painful foot condition that is usually present close to the heel. The plantar fascia — a superficial fibrous tissue on the bottom of your foot — is typically the culprit. Muscles below the plantar fascia and in your calf, as well as sensitive nerves in your ankle or leg, may also contribute to the condition. Excess weight, tight leg muscles, overuse, flat feet and high arches are other factors that can lead to pain.

No matter the cause, finding pain relief is simpler than you think. Heel pain usually goes away on its own in a few weeks, but sometimes it takes up to a year. The problem goes away much faster with treatment. Your doctor can help pinpoint the source of your pain and identify the most effective solutions to relieve it. Podiatric physicians and physical therapists can work with you to find ways to stay active while you heal and provide exercises to regain strength, flexibility and function.
