The annual Marjean Reed Cancer Conference on March 26 drew more than 140 Des Moines University students, staff and faculty, health care professionals and families who have been affected by cancer. Keynote speaker Mohammed Milhem, MBBS, clinical associate professor of internal medicine at the University of Iowa, spoke about the rapidly evolving field of clinical oncology with its continual advances in cancer detection, diagnosis and treatment of melanoma. Conference guests heard an overview of the latest in advanced imaging, genomic profiling and targeted molecular therapies and gained insight into the direction of future treatment modalities within this expanding field.
This year’s conference also featured an inspiring and informational cancer panel including Andrew Nish, M.D., vascular and interventional radiologist, Iowa Radiology, P.C.; Justin Anderson, brain cancer survivor; Lori Tassin, lung cancer survivor; and Trace Kendig, Hodgkin’s lymphoma survivor. Panel members spoke of their cancer journeys from learning of their diagnoses, gaining access to treatment, and navigating insurance and the ups and downs of family and work life, to their final treatments and cancer advocacy work.
