Lifelong learning is increasingly important in our fast-changing world, and it’s particularly emphasized in DMU’s master of health care administration (MHA) program. A recent example of how program faculty “walk the talk” is the prestigious credential attained by Associate Professor Ann York, Ph.D.: She’s now a fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives (ACHE), or FACHE.
York is president-elect of the Iowa chapter of the ACHE.
“Our commitment to professionalism and lifelong learning sets a standard and shows students that we continue to grow and learn throughout our careers,” she says. “We also strive to demonstrate to students that participating in professional organizations is a great opportunity to network and advance your career.”
Carla Stebbins, Ph.D., M.S.’93, chair and director of the MHA program, says York’s achievement shows the MHA program’s stakeholders – including students, many of whom are working professionals – that the DMU faculty are recognized as experts in health care management.
“Our students test us every day in our ability to provide context to the material we present and to assess them on their ability to apply the content to their practice,” Stebbins notes. “To do this effectively, the MHA faculty have the required ‘book’ knowledge and practice expertise. The FACHE credential validates Dr. York’s experience.”
It also benefits students, adds York.
“Participating in professional organizations keeps me current in the field, which is so important when you’re in academia,” she says. “What I learn from interacting with other professionals, I bring back to the classroom.”
