Des Moines University has invited Dr. Jim Withers, pioneer in an emerging field known as “street medicine,” to speak to students and faculty at noon on Monday, April 23, in the Student Education Center Auditorium, 3300 Grand Avenue. The event is open to the public.

Dr. Withers is an internal medicine physician in Pittsburgh who runs Operation Safety Net, one of the nation’s first targeted, full-time street medicine programs. He will share how he began providing medical care to the city’s homeless population.

The presentation is sponsored by DMU’s Homeless Camp Outreach, a student interest group that visits area homeless camps weekly and educates people about the lives of the homeless. For a map and directions to campus, visit www.dmu.edu/about/campus.
