When bombs exploded at the finish line of the Boston Marathon, members of the DMU community who were there felt confusion and fear. Then they kicked into gear, providing medical treatment to victims, expressing sympathy to the city of Boston and sharing a determined spirit to protect the event’s tradition and future.

Vigilantly positioned on the sidelines of soccer fields, ski slopes and boxing rings, these DMU graduates get into the game by keeping athletes in play – and, when needed, taking them out. That’s no small feat when working with competitors who, as one physician noted, “aren’t looking out for their long-term health and safety.”

When Wayne Terry, Ph.D., joined the DMU staff, the University was located in downtown Des Moines. Larry Marquardt, M.L.S., came on board years before “online journals” were a library staple. Both individuals concluded their tenure at DMU on June 30, but their impact on campus and its graduates will long continue.

When Drake University biochemistry and chemistry major Zachary Kadow was accepted into DMU’s undergraduate research program last summer, he found his passion. He also earned one of six Undergraduate Research Excellence Fellowship Awards of the American Physiological Society, which will support his scientific explorations.

Keep your eye on these current and future movers and shakers in health care: DMU students Tara Blalock Hughes and Mali Schneiter recently were elected national chair and national global health representative, respectively, of the Council of Osteopathic Student Government Presidents, the official voting voice of all osteopathic medical students.
