Donald Janower graduated from Des Moines University Medicine and Health Sciences (then Des Moines University College of Osteopathic Medicine) in 1967 and was a general practitioner for 28 years. He was a partner at Park Medical Centers in Detroit and was a longtime supporter of DMU. He and his wife, Barbara, who were married for 59 years, both believe in the power of education and the importance of civic engagement through charitable giving.
In 2009, the couple created the Barbara and Donald Janower Endowed Scholarship Fund, which provides scholarships for DMU osteopathic medical students. Mindful of the tuition burden medical students face, the couple made an additional gift to DMU in 2015 that increased the Janower Endowed Scholarship to a “merit” fund, which covers one-quarter of the recipient’s annual tuition.
When DMU announced the building of its campus at 8025 Grand Ave. in West Des Moines, the couple knew this was another great opportunity to show their support for the university and the students it educates. The couple gave generously to the Purple & Proud Campaign and named one of the clinical labs, now known as the Janower Clinical Lab. This space has the tools to enable learners to engage in various training exercises for demonstrations and practice across the university’s 10 programs. They also function as classrooms outfitted with advanced technology to enhance the learning experience.
DMU is grateful to Donald, who passed away in September 2024, and Barbara for their generosity and belief in the university’s vision and mission. Donald’s legacy lives on through his gifts and support to DMU.
