As the demand for mental health services has grown and outpaced the supply of psychiatrists, non-psychiatric clinicians are increasingly providing vital mental health services in more traditional health care settings.
To assist, Des Moines University Medicine and Health Sciences, together with Broadlawns Psychiatry Residency and the Iowa Veterans Home, will co-present the Psychiatry for Non-Psychiatrists Conference from 8 a.m. to 4:15 p.m., Friday, Oct. 17, 2025, in the Olsen Center next to the Des Moines University Clinic at 3200 Grand Ave., Des Moines.
This conference will provide support to those practitioners, so they are better equipped to serve the mental health needs of their patient populations. Some of the topics include ADHD, alcohol disorders, drug-to-drug interactions, dementia treatment and trauma-informed care, among others.
Four residents from DMU will present at the conference. They include:
- Devesh Kaushik, D.O.โ22, from Broadlawns UnityPointโs Psychiatry Residency Program, speaking with Michelle Davids, D.O., on the topic of โManagement of Alcohol Use Disorder.โ
- Cassandra Lai, D.O. โ23, from Broadlawns UnityPointโs Psychiatry Residency Program, speaking with Autumn Brunia, D.O.โ19, on the topic of โResilient, Not Numb: Thriving Through Trauma in Health Care.โ
- Joseph Van Hulle, D.O.โ21, a fellow in the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics Child and Adolescent Fellowship Program, speaking with Jessica Dotson, D.O., on the topic of โADHD Through the Ages: Clinical Insights and Interventions.โ
- John Wagoner, D.O.โ22, from Broadlawns UnityPoint Psychiatry Residency Program, speaking with Sarah E. Grady, Pharm.D., BCPS, BCPP, on the topic of โMinimizing Drug-to-Drug Interactions and Polypharmacy.โ
