Richard Miles, D.O.’92

Richard Miles, D.O.’92, is medical director of the emergency department of Merit Health Central in Jackson, MS, and owner of Hops and Habanas in the Jackson/Fondren area. He opened the business in nearby Madison in 2009, after a bicep injury forced him to take a month off surgery at the same time he learned a small beer shop he frequented was closing. He opened the Fondren location in 2014 and closed the Madison location in 2017. Hops and Habanas features an indoor bar, a 1,000-square-foot outdoor cabana, a lounge, a walk-in humidor and other features.

According to a feature article about Miles in the Jackson Free Press, he served as a military doctor with the U.S. Army in Fort Gordon, GA, from 1992 to 1993 and then transferred to Fort Rucker in Alabama. He then worked a year as a flight surgeon at Camp Paige in South Korea. He returned to the U.S. in 2000 and completed his three-year emergency medical residency at the Medical College of Georgia in Augusta. Miles then worked at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines until he took his current position at Merit Health in 2005.
