DMU mourns professor emerita

Evelyn Celander

Evelyn Agee Celander, M.S.’67, D.Sc.,  associate professor emerita of biochemistry, died on Nov. 9, 2014, in Des Moines. She was 88.

Dr. Celander joined the University faculty in August 1961 after nine years with the biochemistry department of the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston. She received both the Outstanding Teacher Award and an honorary degree from DMU in 1978. She also was the recipient of the 1992 Distinguished Service Award. She retired in June 1992.

She was preceded in death by her spouse and fellow faculty member, David Robert Celander, M.S., Ph.D., who was professor of biochemistry and chair of the department. Although he was legally blind, the couple were active researchers, including on the topics of heart disease, osteopathic manual therapy and the aging process
