Satterfield was named assistant dean of pre-clinical curriculum and outcomes assessment for Western University’s College of Podiatric Medicine in December 2012. Satterfield has a long history of accomplishments in the field of academic medicine, coming to Western University in September 2010 from the San Antonio area where she previously worked in the orthopedic department at the University of Texas Health Sciences Center.
Podiatric medicine and surgery were a second career for Satterfield, who came from the world of journalism in the border town of El Paso, TX, reporting from both sides of the border first as a features reporter and rising to the position of investigative reporter. After meeting podiatrists who were involved with diabetic wound care and becoming interested in the field, she returned to her alma mater, the University of Texas at El Paso, to earn her pre-science and math courses before enrolling at DMU.
Following graduation, she was selected for a podiatric surgical residency and was chief resident at West Haven Veterans Administration Medical Center, a Yale University School of Medicine Clinical Campus, in New Haven, CT. This was during a severe shortage of residency programs, and she was one of only three people, all women, from her class to earn a two-year surgical residency.
Satterfield was recruited to return to DMU as a faculty member and was named associate dean for academic affairs, a position she retained until being recruited to her home state of Texas.
