Bringing everyone together for swinging fun and a good cause

DMU-Golf-Benefit

Golf, the great outdoors, the coolest people and an important cause: It doesn’t get any better than the DMU Golf Benefit.

The May 22 event at Des Moines’ Waveland Golf Course is designed to raise critically needed scholarship funds for DMU students in all programs. Tuition debt loads at DMU and medical/health sciences institutions across the country continue to climb at a time when the nation needs more health care professionals. The Golf Benefit is a great way to tackle tuition debt and have a blast.

“The main purpose of the event is to raise money to defray students’ tuition costs and ultimately lower student debt,” says Bernard “Bernie” Feldman, D.O.’80, a central Iowa gastroenterologist, DMU trustee and member of the Golf Benefit committee. “It’s also a fun day of camaraderie that includes everybody. You get to meet your cohorts and colleagues in a fun, informal atmosphere.”

Offered by the DMU Alumni Association, this year’s event builds on the successes of past golf outings for the College of Osteopathic Medicine and College of Health Sciences. While those events were open to everyone, a unified golf outing reduces event costs and could attract more members of the DMU and Des Moines communities, hence raising more scholarship funds to benefit all DMU students. The single event also underscores DMU’s strengths as a united, interprofessional health care university with engaged students, alumni, employees and friends.

“The unified golf outing is a good idea as it exposes all the colleges to administrators and alumni,” says Lee Evans, D.P.M.’95, a West Des Moines podiatric physician and Golf Benefit committee member.

The Golf Benefit will have a four-person, best-ball format with two shotgun starts, pending the number of participants. The cost is $200 per person, which includes 18 holes of golf, use of a golf cart, a meal and prizes. Various sponsorship levels also are available.

Another bonus: You don’t have to be Arnold Palmer to participate, notes Pam Harrison Chambers, PA-C’92, M.P.H.’01, associate professor in DMU’s physician assistant program and a member of the Golf Benefit committee.

“If a girl can have fun and raise money for DMU students at the same time, why wouldn’t she help out with planning this inaugural combined golf event?” she quips. “I know nothing about golf, but I do know about having fun.”
