Professional background

I was born in Perry, IA. I received my B.S. from Iowa State University before attending DMU. I completed my surgical training at Loyola University in Chicago and Michigan State University in East Lansing, MI. I have practiced as a general surgeon in Storm Lake for 15 years. I first met my wife on the campus of DMU when she was visiting a friend for the weekend. We have four children, two girls and two boys. Currently I am chief of surgery at Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in Storm Lake, IA, and medical director of the Skin and Vein Laser Clinic.

Favorite part of my job

I enjoy performing cesarean sections. It is always a very uplifting experience to bring a new life into the world.

Why I stay involved with DMU

DMU has provided the foundation for my medical education and consequently has afforded me the opportunity to pursue and achieve my professional goals. I make every effort to attend the alumni reunions as well as the President’s Society events. I am the D.O.’89 class representative and was recently elected to the COM Alumni Board of Directors. I provide third-year medical students from DMU the opportunity to complete their required one-month surgery rotation.

Advice to those just starting out in the profession

Try your best to treat the profession with pride and respect and you will look forward to going to work each and every day.

Hobbies

I am in the process of running a marathon in each of the 50 states (so far I have completed races in 26 states). I enjoy golf and I regularly attend the May DMU golf outing to help raise scholarship funds. Spending time in Aruba with my wife is also high on the hobby list.
