Global health conference at DMU


Des Moines University’s annual global health conference “Global Health and Global Food” will be presented this year by the Heartland Global Health Consortium, in conjunction with the October World Food Prize activities. The half-day conference (which includes lunch) is scheduled for Wednesday, October 14, 11:30 a.m. 4:30 p.m., and will be in the Medical Education Center at Des Moines University (DMU). Presenters will include the following:

  • Tom Vilsack, U.S. secretary of agriculture and former Iowa governor
  • William Foege, M.D., M.P.H., senior fellow of health policy with the Gates Foundation
  • Mary Mincer Hansen, Ph.D., associate professor of public health and global health at DMU
  • Maureen McCue, M.D., Ph.D., adjunct clinical professor in public health for University of Iowa’s global health studies
  • John Gitua, Ph.D., professor of organic chemistry at Drake University
  • Michele Devlin, Dr.P.H., director of the Iowa Center on Health Disparities at the University Northern Iowa
  • Rich Pirog, associate director of the Leopold Center for Sustainable Agriculture at Iowa State University

“This conference brings together national and state leaders to discuss the influence of food and public health interventions on the health of the world,” said Dr. Mincer Hansen. “This conversation provides a forum for interested participants to hear the latest health trends and policy initiatives influencing global health outcomes.”

The Heartland Global Health Consortium is a recent collaboration between Central College, Des Moines University, Drake University, Iowa State University, Simpson College, University of Iowa and University of Northern Iowa.
