Curriculum
Students in a lecture class with their school issued laptops
The first year of the COM curriculum is focused on fundamental scientific principles that support the study of medicine.
The second year builds on the science foundation and offers an integrated organ system approach that reflects the interrelationship and interdependence of body systems. The curriculum uses a combination of lectures, case-based discussion, small group discussion and laboratory exercises. The third and fourth years are spent in teaching hospitals, clinics, and community service agencies to learn the practice of medicine in a clinical setting.
Courses are scheduled in overlapping blocks with generally two major courses at a time. Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine and Physical Diagnosis are scheduled throughout the first two years. Examinations occur about once a week. Grades are recorded as a percentage. Other features of our curriculum are:
- Intensive OMT training in years 1 and 2
- Wide selection of electives in years 1 and 2
- Surgical skills course
- Large number of standardized patient encounters correlated with the systems courses.
- Simulation lab course
- Preventive Medicine course (includes nutrition). All students are required to do a Personal Wellness Profile
- Geriatrics course
- Chronic care elective available for all 4 years
