The annual Rites of Passage ceremonies of the College of Podiatric Medicine and Surgery (CPMS) and College of Osteopathic Medicine (CO M) mark the much-anticipated transition of second-year medical students into the clinical phase of their curriculum.

During her 23 years as a DMU employee, Sally Riggs Wallin was known for her loyalty to the University, her nurturing spirit, her broad smile and her unique way of caring both for faculty and students. Members of the DMU community lost this beloved colleague and friend on March 1.

A clinic that since 1995 has reduced disparities among Latinos in Polk County, IA, as a partnership between DMU and Iowa Health System, will soon move from Des Moines’ south side to the DMU Clinic. It will bring better service to patients and additional training opportunities for students.

When it comes to growing one’s business, Connie Wimer has a green thumb. The Greater Des Moines Business Hall of Famer is also a longtime central Iowa civic leader and the honoree at this year’s Glanton Scholarship Dinner, which will occur on Oct. 4.

Stroke survivors face two realities: Each one’s functionality is affected differently, so individualized therapy is important; and not getting that therapy on an ongoing basis can cause a stroke survivor’s abilities to decline. Tackling those realities was the idea behind DMU’s first “stroke camp.”

A team of DMU osteopathic medical students almost conquered the courts at the 31st annual Rotator Cuff Tournament at A.T. Still University (ATSU) in March, out-dribbling two ATSU teams to place second.

From her volunteerism in an inner city clinic and with developmentally disabled children, her participation in global health service trips and her advocacy for healthy lifestyles, Laura Hoffman is exactly the kind of person you want working in health care. That’s why she received a prestigious national award this spring.
