Please join DMU for this year’s “50 & Better” Health Fair

For the first time in this event’s long history, Des Moines University will host its “50 & Better” Health Fair (formerly known as the “50 & Better Senior Health Fair”) entirely online. While this is not optimal (we love to see your smiling faces in person on our campus), there is a silver lining. Because of the current COVID-19 pandemic and our need to physically distance, you are now able to watch the fair from the comfort of your home, no matter where you live, and on your own schedule.

The fair is set to premiere online this Saturday, Nov. 7, beginning at 8 a.m. at www.dmu.edu/healthfair. If you are unable to tune in this Saturday morning, the virtual fair will be available online at that address for months to come. And you can share the link with family and friends so they can benefit from the fair, too!

This health fair is comprised of the newest research and information on the following health and well-being topics, presented to you by Des Moines University faculty and students:

  • Mental Health During COVID-19
  • Osteopathic Self-treatment to Promote the Body’s Ability to Fight COVID-19
  • Nutrition, Physical Activity and Movement with Bands
  • The Aging Body
  • When to Seek out the Emergency Room?
  • Older Adult Sleep
  • Ankle Pain Prevention
  • HbA1c: Diabetic Neuropathy
  • Common Orthopedic Problems
  • Osteoporosis Screening and Treatment
  • Fall Risks
  • Pelvic Floor/Urinary Incontinence
  • Wound Care
  • Skin Concerns with Aging
  • Blood Thinners
  • Screening for Colon, Breast and Prostate Cancer
  • Importance of Pain Journaling
  • Kidney Health
  • Older Adult Eye Health
  • Navigating End of Life Decisions

The fair will end with a question-and-answer segment led by Paul Volker, M.D., FAAFP, a geriatrician and assistant professor of family and internal medicine at DMU, and members of the University’s Geriatrics Club. We hope that you will take the time to engage with this material, or even just pieces of it that you find interesting! As you watch the fair and you think of questions about the information presented, please email them to questions@dmu.edu

Lastly, after you watch the “50 & Better” Health Fair, please take this survey as a follow-up: www.dmu.edu/healthfairsurvey. We appreciate your feedback.

For any questions or comments, reach out to me, DMU’s community and public relations manager, at community@dmu.edu. We look forward to “seeing” you there at the fair!
