DMU celebrates the class of 2019

It was another celebratory year as Des Moines University awarded 458 degrees in eight programs at the 119th annual Commencement Ceremony on May 24. Family, friends, faculty and staff celebrated the graduates throughout the week with programs, awards and a campus picnic.

“To the Class of 2019, congratulations on your magnificent accomplishment. Enjoy your few days, because your internship is coming and the hard days are going to come back really quickly,” said Kyle Petersen, D.O.’94, who was on campus to celebrate his 25-year reunion. “But you will get through residency. And when you finish that, always remember where you came from. Give back for everything you’ve gotten from this place, because DMU really is a jewel of medical education.”

COMMENCEMENT CEREMONY

Hy-Vee Hall basked in a purple glow as DMU honored graduates with 458 degrees. Distinguished alumnus Arthur Angove, D.O.’62, a retired surgeon, served as grand marshal; reunion alumni of the class of 1994, 1979, 1969 and earlier years led the procession of graduates; and Karen Nichols, D.O., M.A., MACOI, CS, former dean of Midwestern University’s Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine and past president of the American Osteopathic Association, provided the keynote address.

“As Dr. Francis Peabody stated in the 1920s, the secret of the care of the patient is in caring for the patient,” said Nichols, whom the University granted an honorary doctor of science degree. “I see the principle of caring as being more valued as the years go by in caring for the patient, building trust and using the physiology of the kind word. And that’s what osteopathic medicine has always been about.”

CAMPUS PICNIC

A rainy start to the week made things a little soggy, but the clouds parted and we enjoyed the sunshine during the annual campus picnic. Balloon artists entertained the kids and local band, The Nadas, entertained on stage in the Olsen Center.
