Being involved in and promoting high-quality research and scholarly activity are among our core visions at DMU, and in this issue you will find some of the great work happening across campus. We strive to be a cultivator of distinctive faculty and student researchers who discover and disseminate new knowledge. It takes tremendous effort to develop a successful research program, and our faculty, staff and students are motivated by their desire to have a positive impact on health and well-being and to contribute to knowledge about the world around us.

At DMU we have four broad areas of research emphasis: cardiovascular sciences, movement science, public health and pedagogy in the health sciences. However, you will also find a vast array of successful research programs in other areas ranging from paleobiology to cardiovascular risk reduction in the rural primary care setting. Our researchers are having a positive impact on local populations, and you will also find them winning awards for their work at national meetings. Our faculty have developed collaborations with scientists worldwide, showing the extensive outreach of our research programs.

The discoveries we are making in research today will impact the scientific and medical community and the future health of our patients.

Equally as impressive are the successful research grants our faculty are submitting.  In today’s environment, there is strong competition for resources among scientists and clinicians, and our faculty are submitting impressive proposals that are being funded. This really shows the respect that the health sciences and scientific community has for the work we are doing at DMU.

We have made some important investments in our research facilities and in the faculty we have hired, and we hope you share our excitement for the future. What you will find at DMU are faculty, staff and students who are at the top of their fields. They are asking important questions and striving to create innovative collaborations to solve some of our most important problems.

DMU is striving to become a leader with our research culture and environment. We are very proud of the scholarly achievements of our faculty, staff and students, and we want to share those accomplishments with you. In this edition of DMU Magazine, you will find just a few examples of the inspiring work under way on our campus. As you read, I hope you will reflect on how the discoveries we are making in research today will impact the scientific and medical community and the future health of our patients.
