Over spring break, 31 Des Moines University students embarked on a weeklong journey to provide health care, education and supplies to hundreds of underserved individuals in Honduras. Sunday, March 23, 2014: THE RETURN HOME
Today has been another one of those never-ending travel days. We left the Global Brigades compound early in the morning after our last Honduran breakfast of eggs, beans and plantains. Upon our arrival at the airport, we discovered our flight from Tegucigalpa to Texas was delayed a few hours. This delay caused us to miss our connecting flight to Chicago.
It took us nearly two hours to sort through the chaos and figure out our new travel plans. The airlines could accommodate our large group and put us on another flight to Chicago, but it wouldn’t be until Tuesday or Wednesday. Many of us students could not afford to miss more than a day of classes, so we quickly called local bus companies and found one willing to drive us 15 hours to Des Moines from Houston.
Luckily, the students on this trip are extremely flexible and did not complain, despite having to sleep and study on a bus. We arrived safely back at Des Moines University Monday afternoon!
