DMU students win five of six awards at 2013 Research Symposium

The annual DMU Research Symposium was held on Thursday, December 5, and featured Laurel L. Haak, Ph.D., executive director of ORCID. The program entertained and educated a record audience of more than 400 attendees.

Students competed in both oral and poster presentations in various categories, according to their field of study. Oral presenters were assessed on their submitted abstracts and performance, while poster presenters were evaluated on technical, visual and presentation aspects. Six awards were presented among the graduate and undergraduate student contenders.

  • Graduate Oral Presentation: Frederick Blodi, D.O.’17 – “In Vitro Physiology of RPE65 Gene Therapy for Congenital Blindness Highlights the Importance of Early Treatment”
  • Undergraduate Poster Presentation: Nayasha Madhan, Drake University – “The Cloning, Recombinant Expression, and Characterization of Glycogen Synthase from the Parasitic Protozoan Trichomonas vaginalis”
  • Graduate Poster Presentations:
    • Biomedical Science: Lara Terry, M.S.B.S.’18 – “Regulation of Store-Operated Ca2+ Entry in the Vascular Endothelium by the G Protein-Coupled Estrogen Receptor 1”
    • Education: Kelsey Millonig, D.P.M.’17 – “The Relationship Between Academic Performance and Student Clinical Performance Self-Assessment”
    • Movement Science: Ebonie Vincent, D.P.M.’15 – “Comparison of the Modified Paper Grip Test (mPGT) and Rocker Board Test (RBT) in Individuals With and Without Plantar Heel Pain (PHP)”
    • Public Health: Sarah Ling, D.O.’14 – “Broadlawns Family Health Center System Implementation for Immunizations in Children”
