DMU is number-two in tournament

Powering DMU’s Rotator Cuff Tournament team were osteopathic medical students Akhil Gupta and Ryan Geosling, front row; back row, Chris Eernisse, Brandon Phelps, Taylor Beatty, Zach Downs and Mark Turpin.

A team of first-and second-year DMU osteopathic medical students almost conquered the courts at the 31st annual Rotator Cuff Tournament at A.T. Still University (ATSU) March 30-31. After defeating two teams from ATSU’s Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine and another from the ATSU Arizona School of Dentistry and Oral Health, DMU fell to tournament champion Logan College of Chiropractic.

“All the guys had a blast,” says team organizer Mark Turpin, D.O.’14. “I hadn’t played that much back-to-back basketball since junior high.”

DMU’s Sports Medicine Club and Student Government Association provided the numbered jerseys required for the basketball tournament; the University will retain them for future Rotator Cuff Tournament teams, possibly including students from other DMU programs.

“All of us on the team will be here next year, and we want to get some publicity to involve more students and make it an annual tradition,” Turpin says.
