Suku Radia to be honored at annual Glanton Scholarship Dinner

Des Moines University (DMU) will honor Bankers Trust CEO and President Suku Radia at the 2011 Glanton Scholarship Dinner on October 6 at The Meadows Events and Conference Center in Altoona.

The annual event helps to raise money for the scholarship named after The Honorable Luther T. Glanton Jr. and Willie Stevenson Glanton. The scholarship fund provides DMU minority students with greater access to medical and health sciences education.

“Each year we have the opportunity to recognize an Iowan who exemplifies the qualities we want to honor of commitment to diversity, education and service to our community,” said Sue Huppert, vice president of institutional advancement at Des Moines University. “This year we are fortunate to be recognizing Suku Radia. We always have a full house for our Glanton Dinner but this year we are sure to be sold out, as there is such an outpouring of support from the community to be part of the recognition of this outstanding Iowan.

Radia is an active community leader who has served several organizations, including United Way of Central Iowa, Greater Des Moines Community Foundation, Bravo, Greater Des Moines Partnership, Des Moines Arts Center and the Better Business Bureau of Iowa. The recipient of numerous civic awards, he also has served Des Moines University, Drake University and Iowa State University, his alma mater.

The Honorable Luther T. Glanton Jr. and Willie Stevenson Glanton Scholarship Fund, which recognizes students’ academics and financial need, is named for the husband and wife who rose to the pinnacle of the legal profession at a time when most African Americans were struggling to gain basic civil rights. The Glantons had a passion for helping others succeed and the scholarship was established out of that desire in 2004.
