Kids’ fair April 30 will share free fun, education about healthy lifestyles

Obesity is a growing problem for America’s younger generation. Obesity leads to chronic disease, reduced activity, decreased lifespan and a multitude of health problems. Des Moines University students don’t want that to happen to local kids so they created Mission: Active, a health fair for kids, debuting April 30.

“A healthful, active life is so fun and rewarding. We want to help instill great habits at a young age and help local families lead a healthful life,” said Alex Hubbell, second-year D.O. student and co-organizer.

Mission: Active will be held on the Des Moines University (DMU) campus in the Student Education Center, running from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. All families with grade-school-aged kids are invited to attend the free event.

The day’s activities include the following sessions, activities or stations:

  • obstacle course: can you get thru?
  • jump & shake it: fun activities
  • feeling fruity? good foods
  • lather up: sunscreen is key
  • scrub-a-dub: hand washing tips
  • vitamins: why take ’em?
  • say can you see: vision screening
  • let’s get moving: why exercise?
  • step to it: foot exams
  • put your left foot in: balance screen
  • gamer: can Wii get fit?

The event is interactive and informational. No registration is required. Free parking is available behind the building and behind the DMU Clinic in the parking garage. For more information, call 515.271.1041.
