Crystal first became interested in research during her undergraduate education at Drake University. Her sophomore year at Drake she began a summer internship at Des Moines University and worked with Dr. Strom on DNA microarray analysis of Runx1 and Runx2 overepressing cells. She continued research with Dr. Strom through the rest of her undergraduate education working on a new therapy for treating CNS metastasis of HER2 positive breast cancers.

Following her undergraduate education, Crystal entered the master of science in biomedical sciences program at Des Moines University. While working on her masters at DMU, she has continued to work in Dr. Strom’s lab and began studying the biomarkers in pancreatic cancer to determine if they can be used a predictors of biological behavior and chemotherapeutic response. Crystal believes that her work in the Masters of Biomedical Sciences program will help him in his future clinical pursuits.
