(Des Moines, IA) – The 2008 Des Moines University Glanton Scholarship Dinner Oct. 23 at the Meadows at Prairie Meadows was a resounding success. 500 dinner guests enjoyed the evening and $275,000 was raised, increasing the endowment to $1,000,000 for the scholarship for minority medical students.
Banker’s Trust and Prairie Meadows were the lead sponsors with 100 additional corporate and individual sponsorships. Steve Berry and Courtney Green served as masters of ceremonies. The Roosevelt String Quartet provided the reception music.
The 2008 honoree was Renee Hardman, senior vice president of Human Resources at Bankers Trust. In both her personal and professional life, Hardman’s dedication to helping others has had a lasting impact on the community. Her lifelong devotion to the Des Moines community is shown through her involvement in a wide variety of organizations such as the Morris Scholarship Fund, Youth Emergency Services and Shelter, the National Advisory Diversity Committee at Drake University, the Downtown Des Moines Partnership, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Chrysalis Foundation and The Links, Inc.
The Honorable Luther T. Glanton Jr. and Willie Stevenson Glanton Scholarship Fund is awarded annually to assist minority medical or health science students at Des Moines University. The award, which recognizes academics and financial need, is named for the husband and wife who rose to the pinnacle of the legal profession at a time when most black Americans were struggling to gain basic civil rights. The Glantons had a passion for helping others succeed; out of that desire, the Glanton Scholarship was established in 2004.
