Tuneage

by Kendall Conder

mejaimeThere have been an awesome assortment of concerts in Des Moines this summer. I’ve seen Colbie Caillat, Jason Reeves, Gavin DeGraw, Collective Soul, Carolina Liar, Jason Brown, Love and Theft, Gloriana, Emerson Drive, Bucky Covington, John Michael Montgomery and Tracy Lawrence. The only truly important musical encounter, however, has been with the amazingness known as the Eli Young Band.

What can YOU do in two weeks?

Well hello there, Mr. Gondolier!

Well hello there, Mr. Gondolier!

The D.P.T. curriculum is three full years of non-stop excitement and fun. Unlike other programs on campus (ahem… D.O.s… ahem… D.P.M.s… ahem), we have classes scheduled straight through the summer. We do, however, get a two-week break at the beginning of June for some well deserved rest and relaxation.

Not being a fan of rest nor relaxation, I prepared a little something special for my mini-vaca. I hopped on a plane and headed to Italy, Slovenia and Croatia for exploration, adventure and family time.

Friday Recipe: Eggplant Parmesan

by Andrea Cooley

eggplant-parmesanVegetarian dishes don’t have to be flavorless or full of mysterious veggies with weird textures (I still can’t make myself eat tofu). This eggplant parmesan is simple (only 4 main ingredients) and delicious. If you’ve never tried eggplant or don’t think you like it, think again. With the tomatoes, garlic, and cheese you can’t even really taste it!

When buying an eggplant, look for one that is firm to the touch and heavy for its size. Look for one that is shiny and dark. Store in a cool, dry place, and use within a day or two of purchasing.

The right way

by Kendall Conder

head tiltThe D.P.T. ’11s are currently working (or in my case, barely making it) through our upper extremity block. That means we’re studying anything and everything associated with the head, neck, shoulders, arms and chest.

During a recent posture lab, it was discovered that I always hold my head with a slight tilt to the right. I immediately thought this had to do with the obvious fact that the left side of my neck is exceptionally graceful and my body just has this innate tendency to show it off. But then I thought more scientifically and decided instead this is clear proof that the right side of my brain is overly dominant.

IHA golf outing

by Gina Smith

Last week several representatives from DMU attended the Iowa Hospital Association (IHA) annual “Swinging for Scholars” golf outing. We sponsored a hole and distributed DMU golf towels, which turned out to be a useful tool on such a dreary day! And although the day started out cold and rainy, by late afternoon it was hot and humid like a typical July day. Much safer golfing weather once the lightning stopped!

The outing raised over $130,000 for the Iowa Hospital Education & Research Foundation (IHERF) scholarship for health care education. The morning program included a speech from Drake Relays Director Brian Brown, which was inspiring to all in attendance. We also had the opportunity to chat with DMU alums, board members, faculty and some current students who all came out to support the cause.

We’re looking forward to participating again next year – it’s a great event, a great opportunity to network and raise money for scholarships, and the IHA has already guaranteed us beautiful weather!

Great coverage of rural health programs!

by Courtney Tompkins

DMU has been working on launching four Area Health Education Centers (AHEC) in Iowa. This is a great system for recruiting and retaining rural healthcare workers.

Last week KCCI did a story on it. Dr. DeRegnier and Dr. Plundo are both grads. They also speak with a current student doing a rural medicine rotation.

ABC also did a story but it’s not online.Iowa Hospital Association had a blog on the topic awhile back. If you missed it, check it out!
