DMU helping with physicals for kids

Tuesday, July 6th, 2010

Every year DMU students and staff provide hours upon hours of community service, including many free physicals for school children.

DMU hosted a free physical fair earlier this spring and will host another in August of 2011. If you missed the one on campus, check out the Shalom Zone Health Fair on August 10, 2010, 1-7 p.m. at Casady School, 1801 16th St. in Des Moines. The event is free and includes school physicals with immunizations, vision & dental screenings, information about health insurance and even some school supplies. Kids must be accompanied by an adult and they must be checked in before 6 p.m. The DMU team will be seeing patients 4-7 p.m. that day.

Please feel free to spread the word to any families who might benefit.

DMU invites you for a hands-on exploration of campus

Monday, June 7th, 2010

If you’ve wished you could step into a lab to see current students in action and actually witness students’ skills before picking your graduate school, you can’t miss Discover DMU Day.

On June 30, from 2 to 5 p.m., Des Moines University (DMU), a medical and health sciences university offering nine graduate degrees, is opening its doors for undergraduate students and advisors to explore, observe and investigate the school.

“Discover DMU Day was developed as a chance for college students from the midwest to see our school unfiltered. It’s an opportunity for the students to choose what most interests them and prioritize where to spend their time while visiting campus,” explained Margie Gehringer, director of DMU enrollment. “Advisors and parents are also welcome.”

Visitors can check out aspects of the school that interest them, meet faculty and attend a health professions fair.

Some of the options for discovery include a chance to examine the lifelike human simulators and sit in on a suturing session or laparoscope demonstration. Also an option is the chance to experience the simulated clinical setting students train in before entering a real clinic. Demonstrations of osteopathic manipulative medicine will also be ongoing through the afternoon. Current DMU students will be on hand as guides around campus.

DMU Library exhibits document early contributions of African American surgeons, global health successes

Thursday, June 3rd, 2010

(Des Moines, IA) – The public is invited to the Des Moines University (DMU) library for two great exhibits this summer. The “Opening doors: contemporary African American academic surgeons” display arrived June 1 and “Against the odds: making a difference in global health” begins July 5. Both are from the National Library of Medicine, the largest medical library in the world.

“Both displays cover many topics and are typically booked several years in advance. The first offers an opportunity to present and highlight some of the contributions from African American physicians to academic medicine and surgical practice,” explained Library Director Larry Marquardt.

The first display uses the stories of a few African American medical pioneers as a glimpse into past contributions.

The July exhibit ties with the University’s global health initiative to train students to be global citizens through education, advocacy and global experiences. The display shows how collaboration between families, medical workers, scientists and governments improves health care as well as highlighting past public health campaigns that made an impact. It will be available until August 12.

“Health information saves lives. Through this exhibit we hope to increase awareness of treatable, manageable global health diseases and issues,” said Yogesh Shah, M.D., associate dean of global health at DMU.
