How to Apply

The post-professional doctor of physical therapy program allows licensed physical therapists an opportunity to expand their decision-making skills, improve management abilities and promote ongoing professional development through the convenience of an online program. Below you will find a detailed list of the steps required to apply for admission to the PPDPT program. Des Moines University will no longer enroll students into its PPDPT program after July 15, 2015.  Students enrolling between now and July 15, 2015 will follow a two-year plan of study model.  Students will have the option to complete their transitional DPT degree following this two-year model, or may work at an accelerated pace.

How to apply

  1. Review admission requirements
  2. Fill out online application and pay the $60 application fee
    DMU alumni do not have to pay an application fee or complete steps 3-5 below.
  3. Submit two letters of recommendation from:
    • A U.S. trained and licensed physical therapist
    • Another health care provider

    Letters of recommendation must be sent by the letter writer directly to DMU via our website at or by regular mail. Letters should be typed on business letterhead.

  4. TOEFL Scores. Individuals who earned their physical therapy degree outside of the United States must submit scores from the Test of English as a Foreign Language Exam (TOEFL). A total score of 100 (Internet-based test) is recommended, and a writing score of 27 (Internet-based test) is recommended. Waivers of the TOEFL requirement are automatically given to applicants who completed their physical therapy degree in one of the following countries: Australia, Canada (excluding French Quebec), New Zealand and the United Kingdom. Graduates from English-speaking countries in Africa are also included in the waiver.
  5. Submit a personal statement. You may upload your personal statement as an attachment to the online application, or you may submit it separately via mail, email or fax. The personal statement should be approximately one page and should explain your reasons for pursing the doctor of physical therapy degree. Please know that the personal statement is used as an indicator of an applicant’s ability to communicate in written English at a graduate school level. If it is determined that an applicant’s personal statement does not meet the graduate-level expectations of the program, the applicant may be required to successfully complete an online writing course prior to being eligible for admission. Questions regarding this may be directed to the admission coordinator of the PPDPT program.

You will be notified by email of acceptance into the program. Once you have been notified that you have been accepted into the post-professional doctor of physical therapy program, you may register for courses.

To enroll in courses you will need to complete the online application process and be accepted into the program. An Orientation tutorial is required for all students before registering for PPDPT coursework.

International students

Des Moines University’s post-professional doctor of physical therapy program is available completely online. As a result, international students in this program do not meet SEVIS requirements for studying in the U.S.

International applicants should also become familiar with the guidelines for international students.
