Alumnus leaves enduring impact

Barbara Harken Monsour and Roger Monsour, D.O.’63, returned to the DMU campus for his 50-year class reunion.

Roger Monsour, D.O.’63, and his wife of 57 years, Barbara Harken Monsour, met and married while he was a student at the College of Osteopathic Medicine and Surgery (COMS), now DMU. Through his career as an anesthesiologist, he and Mrs. Monsour remained grateful for the impact his medical education had on their lives. They acted on that gratitude by becoming members of the University’s Founders Society, which recognizes cumulative lifetime gifts of $100,000 and more.

Members of the DMU community were saddened by Dr. Monsour’s passing on Sept. 26, 2019, in Grand Blanc, MI, at the age of 83. But the couple’s impact on DMU students will endure through their generous giving.

After Dr. Monsour graduated from COMS in 1963, he completed an internship in 1964 at Flint Osteopathic Hospital, where he later became chief of staff. His passion for helping others as well as his expertise as a board-certified anesthesiologist led him to chair many committee positions throughout his career in Michigan and South Florida. He was an emeritus member of the foundation board for the University of South Florida (USF) and founder of the Monsour Executive Wellness Center there. He also was active in the Knights Templar, the Royal Order of Arch Masons, his church and other organizations.
