It was a beautiful football Saturday at Drake Stadium on October 3 as Des Moines University and Drake University Law School renewed their rivalry in the Malpractice Bowl. DMU split the games, with the women’s team winning 19-0 and the men’s team rallying, but falling 28-12.

Made up almost entirely of first-year students, the women’s team had players from each program on campus. The offense scored touchdowns on runs and deep passes, but the defense led the way with four interceptions in the shutout victory.

“The Malpractice Bowl is always a highlight of the year and is a great way to get to know students from other programs at DMU,” said Chantal Rozmus, D.O.’18, team captain and one of only three second-year students on the team. “We had a superb coaching staff made up of first-time Malpractice Bowl coaches Nate Spencer, D.O.’18, Tanner Hardy, D.O.’19 and Ferris Yeh, D.O.’19.”

Early mistakes proved costly for the men’s team. While the offense moved the ball well throughout the game, the first two drives ended in interceptions in the red zone. Despite a late rally, the two-touchdown cushion was too much to overcome.

“It’s a fun and competitive tradition. For only one game a year, it is remarkable to see how the teams come together to produce a competitive product,” said men’s team captain David Koenig, D.O.’18. “Everyone contributes their knowledge and experiencing, embodying the collaborative experience of both programs.”
