On October 10, 374 first-year students took the first step on their journey to clinical practice, receiving their first white coat. The white coat signifies the excellence and caring demanded of those entering health care professions. The annual rite of passage emphasizes the importance of this responsibility, with students taking an oath affirming their commitment to the highest standards of compassion and patient care.

Des Moines University adopted this tradition in 1997 to encourage professionalism, scientific excellence and compassionate health care. Students don the white jacket and sign the the University’s Professional Integrity Code in a pledge initiated by students as a reminder to strive for excellence and honorable behavior. The coats are provided as gifts of DMU alumni and other donors.

This year, 220 osteopathic medical students, 54 podiatric medicine and surgery students, 48 physician assistant students and 52 physical therapy students participated in the ceremony. Family members and friends filled the Civic Center of Greater Des Moines to show their support for the students.
