More than 200 DMU students, employees, alumni and friends took the challenge to Run DMU on September 11. Runners and walkers warmed up with a pre-race yoga session and nourished their tired bodies after five tough kilometers with food, refreshments and OMM treatments.

The annual 5K was a family affair for Kari Smith, D.P.T.’04, BCB-PMD, manager of the DMU Physical Therapy Clinic. She and her son, Carter, both won their age groups. But Kari took home family bragging rights, besting Carter by a minute and a half.

Overall winners were Jake Sutton, in a time of 16:09, and Emily Whisler, D.O.’18, who clocked in at 21:58. DMU Chief Financial Officer Mark Peiffer and board member Arthur Angove, D.O.’62, also beat the field in their age groups.

Proceeds from the run — $7,513 in total — were invested in the DMU Fund, which supports all aspects of education at Des Moines University, from student scholarships and financial aid to technology and research.
