Sweet, sweet corn!

There actually is one annual Des Moines area event that I try to attend every year and every year have a schedule conflict. The sounds of it make my stomach growl with delight and my mouth waters uncontrollably…

This event I’m describing is the Annual Adel Sweet Corn Festival. This event has a 5k run, vendors, art/crafts for sale, a beer garden and other miscellaneous. The best part though….SEVEN TONS OF FREE SWEET CORN! That’s right, free. As in, you can eat fresh, hot, buttery Iowa sweet corn until your tummy hurts. Friday night is shucking time and Saturday at 9:30 a.m., the parade heads through town but the main event begins at 11 a.m. – sweet corn time.

Adel is about 20 minutes west of Des Moines. The Adel Chamber of Commerce has directions and details.

The other morning I heard a comedian from California on Star 102.5 fm talking about Iowa sweet corn. I wish I could find a clip of it to share. He said it was the only vegetable he’d ever heard of that was so good they named it after a fruit (our famous “peaches and cream” variety) and said he was going to try to smuggle a few bushels back home. It just went on & on and was so true, I was giggling while driving.
