How to Apply

Applicants should apply online and submit all required materials to complete their file.  All completed applications will be reviewed following each posted deadline, and new students are admitted each fall, spring and summer.

Individuals may also consider applying to enroll in select courses for professional development.

Application Deadline

Fall 2016 Term – Submission deadline is July 29, 2016. If SOPHAS is not able to complete the processing of your file by August 15 your file will not be considered for Fall Admission (SOPHAS processing can take up to 4 weeks).  

Application Process

Applicants must apply through the Schools of Public Health Application Service (SOPHAS), our centralized application service partner. All documents may be submitted through your SOPHAS online application. As transcripts and test scores may take several weeks to process, it is strongly recommended that you begin your application early.

Official transcripts
Transcripts showing all previous undergraduate and graduate work with grades and degrees. Transcripts must be submitted directly to SOPHAS.
Official test scores
The GRE is required for the Master of Public Health program. Des Moines University’s GRE Designated Institution Code is 1822. Use this code number to designate DMU as a recipient of your test scores.The GRE requirement will be waived for the following:

  • Applicants who have proof of a previously earned a master’s degree or higher.
  • Applicants who can provide results from another graduate admission test, including: GMAT, MCAT, DAT, LSAT, PCAT.
Contact information for a minimum of three references. Evaluations may come from an employer, supervisor, academic advisor, professor or mentor and address the following:

  • Academic background
  • Experience in leadership
  • Future career goals
  • Commitment to service and the industry
  • Qualities which make you a strong candidate
Personal statement
A personal statement addressing the following questions:

  • Academic background
  • Reasons for interest in Des Moines University Public Health and future career goals
  • Past experience, including leadership, service/volunteer, teaching and/or employment
  • Qualities which make you a strong candidate
TOEFL requirement
Applicants with degrees completed in languages other than English must submit TOEFL scores to be considered for admission. Applicants may be exempt from the TOEFL requirement if they can submit documentation from their institution’s registrar verifying the primary language of course delivery was English. Please use the TOEFL code 5688 when completing your application. TOEFL scores will then automatically be included in the SOPHAS application.

Each application is reviewed by our admissions committee. The committee reviews applications for evidence of the applicant’s intent and purpose in pursuing the degree, work/volunteer/leadership experience and past academic performance.
