What is iTunes U?

iTunes U is a free service hosted by Apple, Inc. that allows colleges and universities to organize, promote, store and distribute audio and video content to users on campus and beyond. It allows users to download content to their MAC or PC, transfer the information to a portable device and view or listen to it anywhere and at anytime. What is DMU on iTunes U?

DMU on iTunes U is a university-wide educational site that provides educational, marketing and service content using a multi-media experience (video, audio and PDF) that accommodates users’ mobile lifestyle.

Who uses DMU on iTunes U?

The purpose of DMU on iTunes U is promotional and educational. DMU students, faculty and staff can download podcasts from iTunes U as well as the general public.Â

Do I need an Apple computer to use this site?

No. Anyone can listen to or view podcasts using a Microsoft Windows based personal computer by installing the free iTunes software.

Do I need an iPod or iPhone to synch podcasts to a mobile device?

No. You can listen to podcasts using a non-Apple MP3 player. You will need to convert the .mp4 AAC files into .mp3 format. To do this, download the content into your iTunes application. In the iTunes preferences, click on the “Advanced” icon and navigate to the “Importing” tab. Then select “MP3 Encoder” in the import using menu. Highlight the file(s) you wish to convert, go to the Advanced menu, and click on “Convert Selection to .mp3”

Is there a fee to use DMU on iTunes U?

No, the podcasts and iTunes software are free of charge.

How do I get started?

First, make sure you have the most current version of iTunes installed on your Mac or PC computer. Download the application. Also make sure that you are running the most current update of your system software. Go directly to our iTunes U page.

How do I obtain a consent form for recording and publishing content?

The University provides a standard consent form for recording and publishing content. Click here to download a copy of the consent form. Consent must be obtained for all persons who are recorded or videotaped, including students, with the exception of DMU employees before posting to the Des Moines University public iTunes U site.

What type of content can be uploaded to DMU on iTunes U?

Educational content, informational podcasts, campus services and resources, news and topics of interest to the general public are some of the options. Content must:

  1. Reflect the DMU Honor Code
  2. Contain no profanity
  3. Comply with all copyright laws

How does copyright work with DMU on iTunes U?

Individual faculty and DMU retain all ownership rights, including copyright, patents, trademarks and other intellectual property of the content uploaded to DMU on iTunes U. Apple has the right to store DMU content that is uploaded to Apple servers and to serve DMU content through the DMU on iTunes U site. Apple also has the option to use DMU public content for promotional, marketing and demonstration purposes. More information is available in the iTunes U Terms of Use agreement.
