Start reducing your fall risk
Suffering a fall can injure much more than ones pride. Among older adults, falls are the leading cause of both fatal and nonfatal injuries – such as hip fractures, head traumas and lacerations. Fortunately, exercises to promote balance and prevention efforts can help those at risk of traumatic falls stay safe.
A free, public event, “Hello Balance. Goodbye Falls.” at Des Moines University on Saturday, Sept. 19 from 9-11 a.m. will address risk factors and prevention methods. The event is presented by Des Moines University, Wesley Acres and the Drake University College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences.
The event will be held in the Des Moines University Student Education Center. Attendees will experience wellness prevention in action, in an effort to build awareness of what causes falls and reduce their risk of falling.
In addition, during the wellness event, attendees can learn about and participate in the following events:
• Blood pressure screening
• Bone density screening
• Nutrition education
• Medication review (bring medication list)
• Balance screening
• Tai Chi — a Chinese Martial Art that increases health, vitality & longevity
• Qigong — a Chinese system of physical exercises and breathing control
• Chair Yoga
