StudentDoctor of Podiatric Medicine Program

Home Town: Orem, Utah
Undergrad School:  Brigham Young University
Major: Public Health
Age: 25
Class: Doctor of Podiatric medicine – Class of 2015

Were you surprised by anything in the program?

It was all I expected it to be.  I was surprised at how well the students from all of the programs get along.  Students are very willing to help anyone else that needs it no matter what program they are in.  My experience is mostly with DO and DPM students mainly because we have the majority of our classes together our first year.

Any advice for prospective students?

Ask a lot of questions in order to figure out how you really feel about a program, school, or anything really.  You will get all types of information, but take what you want and leave the rest behind.  To be well informed is what will help you most.

Why do you want to be a doctor of podiatric medicine?

I will work with all types of problems that encompass many aspects of different specialties.  I see a bright future for this profession and feel that I will have many opportunities to affect the lives of those who are in need of quality health care.

Why DMU?

DMU is a great school.  I felt that DMU would give me every opportunity I needed to be successful, not only in school, but for the rest of my career.  I felt comfortable on my interview day and that says a lot.  This is a great profession.  I am so glad I didn’t pass up the opportunity to interview here.  That day was very important in deciding which school to go to since I had already been accepted to another really good school.

How is DMU family friendly?

I feel that they are very inclusive of both types of situations.   Being married, I have never felt that there are not enough opportunities for my wife and me to be involved in activities that are school sponsored.

Extracurricular activities:

There are a ton of clubs.  My involvement with the APMSA has been really fun.  I love ice hockey and there are a few rinks out here.  I love food and I was very surprised to find that there are a ton of fun restaurants here in the metro area.

Career objectives:

My main goal is to get all the training I can to be able to help as many people as I can in their search for relief from their ailments.  I also want to do what I can to promote the profession throughout my career.

Favorite thing about Des Moines:

Fried Butter on a stick at the state fair!  Ok, that is really good, but I like the feel of Des Moines.  It isn’t a huge city, but you have everything you need here.  I also really like the downtown farmer’s market.  There is always something going on in Des Moines and it is a great place to have a family.
