Areas of Expertise

Dr. Volker joined the Des Moines University Faculty in 2015 after over 25 years of experience practicing full-spectrum family medicine in rural Iowa.  He enjoys using that experience in both large- and small-group teaching of heath-profession students at DMU.

Service

  • Faculty Adviser for 14 Medical Students. Meets mostly with first-year students on 15 occasions one-on-one to review test failures as well as provide general academic and existential counseling. Some counseling sessions are with students not assigned as my formal advisees, but who seek my advice.
  • Adviser to COM Geriatrics Club.
  • Along with the External and Government Affairs office, advocates for the State of Iowa Loan Repayment Program to students of all DMU colleges and departments interested in rural health care provision.
  • Physician Adviser and participant (clinic representative) in DMU senior health fair.
  • Participant in “Meet the faculty night” mixer for new DMU students.
  • Participant in DMU White Coat, Rite of Passage, and Commencement Ceremonies.
  • Completed annual online course of instruction in safety and compliance, and quarterly CPR performance refreshers, as required by the University.
