Class: Master of Science in Physician Assistant Studies – Class of 2014
What is your advice for prospective students?
Get as much experience as you can. Whether it’s working, shadowing, volunteering, or observing, it will help you. I’ve definitely come to appreciate all the different shadowing I did and highly recommend getting a variety of experiences before starting PA school.
Why do you want to be a PA?
I want to be a PA because I want to have the knowledge, autonomy and confidence to treat patients with the highest quality care, while still being supported by a supervising physician. I like that PAs have the flexibility to change specialties throughout their careers. I also want to be able to spend more time with the patients, which the PA profession allows.
Why did you choose DMU?
I chose DMU for a few reasons. First, I felt very comfortable and welcome here during my interview and could really see myself here. I was really excited about all the quality clinical experiences we get within the first year including SPAL, shadowing our faculty, and the clinical skills labs. DMU’s PANCE pass rates are excellent and I felt I was going to receive a quality education here.
What do you do when you’re not studying?
I try and workout a few times a week. It’s a great study break and keeps me sane! I’ve gone home and had friends visit on a few weekends too. We’ve gone to the awesome Des Moines farmers market and Grays Lake!
Were you surprised by anything in the program?
Honestly I was surprised by how much free time I do have. I wasn’t expecting to be able to take a night off studying, much less a weekend. With this program, I’ve been able to plan ahead so that I can take some time to spend with family or friends when I get the chance. It’s a lot of work, but it’s worth it to have that weekend off!
