Des Moines University’s employees and students are committed to making the community a better place to live and is committed to promoting volunteerism. Faculty, staff and students are actively encouraged to “do a world of good”. Nonprofit organizations can request DMU employee’s assistance through the employee volunteer program.
Each year, employees may take off up to 40 hours of paid time to volunteer at approved projects in the community. Community organizations must apply to become an approved project. If awarded, DMU will work with you to identify and place DMU volunteers at your project that takes place during business hours, Monday through Friday.
Criteria for community services projects
Des Moines University has three main criteria for community service projects which may change yearly. They are:
- The project should meet one of DMU’s community service focus areas (education, health, poverty issues).
- The project should be located in the greater Des Moines area
- The project should be facilitated by a nonprofit organization having 501(c)(3) status.
Ineligible projects include those that support a political party, include any element of religious proselytizing or provide a direct benefit to a for-profit entity, a labor union, a partisan political organization.

If your project does not qualify for assistance through our employee volunteer program, DMU may still be able to help. We regularly communicate volunteer opportunities to staff, faculty, and students to help them connect with community organizations working to make a difference in the greater Des Moines area.
