Dean for University Research
Dr. Bryan Larsen PhD
Dr. Bryan Larsen received his Ph.D. in microbiology from the University of Iowa in 1976. His research combines study of mechanisms of microbial pathogenicity with an interest in infectious diseases relevant to obstetrics and gynecology.
As a result, his research programs over the last 25 years have included both basic laboratory science and clinical research studies and have spanned a broad range of topics from endocrine mechanisms of normal flora control, to pharmacokinetics of antimicrobial drugs in pregnancy, to the discovery of immunomodulating substances of microbial origin. He has presented his research at numerous national and international meetings and has been a visiting professor in China and Germany.
Dr. Larsen's research career has led to the publication of over 130 published manuscripts and book chapters as well as a microbiology text - now in its second edition - commissioned by the Council of Resident Education for Obstetrics and Gynecology. He has received funding from the National Institutes of Health and numerous pharmaceutical companies and was the recipient of the prestigious Johnson and Johnson Focused Giving Award. He also serves on the editorial board of the Annals of Clinical and Laboratory Science and reviews manuscripts for a number of clinical and basic science journals. He previously served as the chairperson of the City-wide Institutional Review Board which provides ethical and scientific review for clinical studies conducted in multiple hospitals in Des Moines.
Currently he serves as the Dean for University Research and Biomedical Graduate Studies, and Professor of Microbiology and Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at DMU where he maintains an active research program in addition to teaching and administrative duties. He currently is investigating molecular mechanisms involved in regulation of antimicrobial export from fungal pathogens and is also investigating natural compounds that control blood sugar in clinical research studies and the use of electronic media for clinical data acquisition. He has been at DMU since 1997.
