Undergraduate named APS research fellow

When Drake University biochemistry and chemistry major Zachary Kadow was accepted into DMU’s undergraduate research program last summer, he found his passion. He also earned one of six Undergraduate Research Excellence Fellowship Awards of the American Physiological Society, which will support his scientific explorations.

Commencement + Reunion = one celebratory weekend

There had to be a lot of sore faces from all the smiling after DMU’s simultaneous Commencement and Reunion Weekend in May. The happy graduates included the Class of 2013, DMU’s new “medallion” alumni who led the Commencement processional and a former White House doctor who received an honorary degree.

Larry Marquardt led transformation of the DMU Library from its card-catalog days to today’s wide variety of print and online resources. He also is widely known as a positive, service-driven colleague. “It only takes a few minutes to hear his booming laugh,” says Timothy Steele, Ph.D., chair and professor of microbiology and immunology.

Five-plus decades of service add up to lasting impact

When Wayne Terry, Ph.D., joined the DMU staff, the University was located in downtown Des Moines. Larry Marquardt, M.L.S., came on board years before “online journals” were a library staple. Both individuals concluded their tenure at DMU on June 30, but their impact on campus and its graduates will long continue.
