Commencement + Reunion = one celebratory weekend

There had to be a lot of sore faces from all the smiling after DMU’s simultaneous Commencement and Reunion Weekend in May. The happy graduates included the Class of 2013, DMU’s new “medallion” alumni who led the Commencement processional and a former White House doctor who received an honorary degree.

Spirited swinging spurs scholarships

DMU’s inaugural unified Golf Benefit on May 22 was a great success, despite sometimes drizzly weather, thanks to the 77 golfers, lighthearted competition and a great cause – to raise scholarship funds for students in all DMU programs.

Lots of learning in St. Lucia

When Kelsey Mims first went to St. Lucia as a DMU physical therapy student, the fast-paced global health rotation felt “almost like a whirlwind.” When she returned this spring as an alumna and clinical instructor with another DMU group, she says “it was almost like walking back into a family.”

Hruby’s holistic career merits Still Medallion

Throughout his professional life, Raymond Hruby, D.O.’73, has shown he understands, applies, teaches and supports the principles and concepts of osteopathic medicine. His holistic career motivated the American Academy of Osteopathy to award him its highest honor, the A.T. Still Medallion of Honor.

‘Doctor on the plane’ saves life at 30,000 feet

On a recent plane flight, Stephen Richards, D.O.’74, R.Ph., knew it wasn’t a good sign when he observed a flight attendant racing down the aisle with an oxygen tank. He was right. Fortunately for the passenger involved, Richards is a longtime family physician who came to the rescue.

Roth to receive ACEP honor

Robert Roth, D.O.76, FACEP, became active in the American College of Emergency Physicians and its Tennessee chapter shortly after graduating from the College of Osteopathic Medicine and Surgery, now DMU. For his leadership and service since, he’ll receive the organization’s Meritorious Service Award.

Alumnus on the scene after Oklahoma tornado

Tom Wicks, D.P.M.’94, became a volunteer firefighter after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. He witnessed another type of terror when he went to Moore, OK, the evening after an EF5 tornado and its 200-plus mile-per-hour winds devastated the community.
